Locking

Coast:  West Coast.
Style:  Funk Style.

Locking is one of the three original forms of hip hop.  It is one of the two main funkstyles (popping being the other), so called because of its origination to funk music.

Popping and Locking are two separate styles.  Pop N Lock does not exist.  It is believed that the term "pop n lock"  was created because dancers would go from popping straight into locking, causing the untrained viewer to believe they were the same style.  This is similar to a dancing a 32 count adagio followed by a 32 count jazz combo and saying that the style is "bazz."

THE HISTORY OF LOCKING
The Campbellock Dancers
Locking was created in the early 70's by Don Campbell in Los Angeles, California.  Campbell, an art student, would get together with his friends every day in the cafeteria at Trade Tech college, where people would dance around a juke box to soul music.

At first, Campbell simply drew the dancers.  Then, he began to learn some of their steps.  Campbell would pause between moves to think of what would he would do next, resulting in a more abrupt and "jerky" dance style.  In particular, dawn would always pause in the same position before doing the funky chicken.  His friends called it "the lock," which became his signature move.  Campbell's style of dance was so different than the smooth soul steps of his time that he was given the nickname "Don Campbellock."

As his dancing progressed, Don would dance with any prop he had at hand, such as his hat or handkerchief.  He consistently returned to his signature "lock."  Campbell originated several new moves within his "locking" style.  The "Uncle Sam" was created when Don saw a friend of his in the crowd and pointed at the friend.  Then he pointed at another friend, and so on.  "Wrist Rolls," another part of today's locking vocabulary, were in Campbell's original dancing repertoire.

Eventually, Don created a group of dancers that he called "The Campbellock Dancers."  The group was composed of:  Don "Campbellock" Campbell, Greg "Campbellock Jr." Pope, James "the Original Skeeter Rabbit" Higgins, Leo "Fluky Luke" Williamson, Adolfo "Shabba-Doo" Quiñones (O-zone from the Golan-Globus movies, "Breakin'" and "Breakin' 2: The Electric Boogaloo"), Toni "Ruby" Basil (world-reknowned choreographer; known for her hit 80's single, "Mickey"), Charles "Slim the Robot" Williams and Fred "Mr. Penguin" Barry.

Later, the Campbellock dancers were scouted to perform on Soul Train.  The nation-wide exposure that Soul Train gave to locking was unheard of, at that time.  Most forms of dance were highly regional (i.e. what was danced in NYC stayed in NYC).  Locking became a dance craze that exploded among the urban African American demographic.

Network TV began calling the Campbellock dancers "the Lockers," a more easily remembered and pronounced name.  Their television appearances included the Carrol Burnette Show, Soul Train, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, 90-minutse Live on CBS, and their own Saturday morning cartoon special on NBC!

The Lockers reinvented themselves in the mid 70's, in response to their waning media exposure.  At this time, Popping (a new style of west coast dance) began to trump Locking as the new and cool way to dance.
