Treating Dance Injuries - Blisters

Blisters form when your skin rubs against another surface (for dancers it may be a pointe shoe, a tap shoe, or the floor) causing friction that damages your skin.  It is important to take care of your blisters - infected blisters have sent dancers to the hospital, and some dancers have nearly died because they contracted blood poisoning from an infected blister!

Prevention
1.  Dancers who tap dance can and should wear socks in their tap shoes.  Not only does this protect your shoe from getting smelly and damaged from your sweat, it also protects your feet.  Make sure that you always wear a fresh pair of socks - damp socks will increase odor, bacteria, and risk of damage.

2.  Pointe dancers should always wear adequate padding in their pointe shoes.  Some dancers favor good old fashioned lamb's wool, while others prefer wool pads, or toe savers.  Some dancers add a paper towel or extra layer of newspaper into their shoe to avoid moisture and protect feet.  Over time, calluses will form and the feet will be less susceptible to blistering.

3.  Taping the feet - Some dancers use medical tape to cover the areas where they are prone to blisters.  While this works for some dancers, other dancers find that taping the feet and toes causing a certain amount of restriction of movement that may affect dancing.

4.  Dancers who dance without shoes, such as modern dancers, should take great care with their calluses.  Calluses should be built up enough to protect the feet but one must make sure that they do not get too thick or they will crack.  Use a pumice stone to maintain calluses.

5.  There are several products on the market for the prevention and treatment of blisters:  Spenco's Second Skin is a revolutionary hydrogel dressing that helps protect against blisters, pressure and friction.  Dr. Scholl's also recently came out with blister pads.

Treatment
If you find you have blisters, you have three goals:  1.  To reduce pain  2.  To keep the blister from enlarging  3.  To prevent infection.

Small, intact blisters that don't cause pain or discomfort usually don't require treatment.  If they are protected from further friction and are left to their own devices they should heal themselves.  The skin on the blister should be kept in tact because it will protect the blister from becoming infected.

Large and/or painful blisters for which the skin is not broken should be carefully drained.  First,  the blister should be cleaned with soap, water and rubbing alcohol.  Then, the blister is ready to be drained.  Many dancers use e a needle held over flame from a candle or lighter (always use caution when using fire!  Make sure you are in the presence of an adult) until it glows red.  The needle is allowed to cool, and then it is used to make a small hole at the edge of the blister.  The fluid is drained with gentle pressure.  Antibiotic ointment should be applied.  Put a bandage over the blister and change it daily, or when the bandage become wet or dirty.

Treat blisters with small tears in the skin (or roofs) just as you would treat a large or painful blister after it has been drained (antibiotic ointment and bandage).

Large blisters with broken skin should have the roof (whiteish overskin) removed with scissors (small, sharp scissors).  Wash with soap and water, apply antibiotic ointment, and bandage as previously described.

If you feel that your blister has become infected, consult a healthcare professional.
