College Versus No College for Dancers

Pros of College:  
- Maturity:  Some dancers need four years in college to mature.  While a college dance program will improve dance skills and educate dancers about show business, some dancers need to go to college to learn important skills and lessons necessary for success in the industry - meeting deadlines, completing a project, and organization, for example.  These lessons aren't just learned in dance class - they are learned in the core classes required by a college's curriculum.  

In addition, the residential college life may teach a dancer important skills they will need to live on their own in big dance cities such as New York and Los Angeles 

- Backup:  Dancers who have a college degree also have a "backup plan," a degree that will help them to find gainful employment in the event that they cannot or don't want to dance.  Also, a college degree will help dancers to find gainful non-dance employment while they are auditioning.    

Cons of College:  
- Quality: Some professionals worry that dance colleges are lacking commitment to creating dancers that are capable of thriving in the dance industry.  

Other Options:  
1.  Delayed enrollment - It may be a good idea for the dancer to delay enrollment for a year to participate in auditions and get to know the dance industry.  A year in "the biz" will provide invaluable experience that will either solidify that the dancer is on the right path or causes the dancer to rethink what path they want to take in life.  In short, taking time to audition before college may help a dancer decide if dance is really what she wants to do with the rest of her life.  If it's not, the time and money that may have been committed to a college dance degree will be saved.  

Common Myths
-  I need a college degree in dance to have a dance career.  
This myth is not true.  Many professional dancers have launched their careers without college degrees.  

-  If I go to college, it will be too late for me to dance.  
This myth is not true.  It is not too late to become a professional dancer after graduating from college!  With advancements in dance medicine and dance education, dance careers are lasting well into the 50s.  In fact, some of the most entrancing performers are older performers who have developed an amazing sense of self and of their own dance style.  Take a look at Chita Rivera, now starring in the Broadway Show A Dancer's Life.  At age 73, she's still dancing!
