Choosing an Undergraduate Dance College or University

1.  BFA v. BA - Earning a BFA (bachelor of fine arts) is more prestigious and well-respected than earning a BA (bachelor of arts).  So, when choosing a dance college choose a program that offers BFA.  

2. Type of dance - what type of dance are you interested in focusing on?  Ballet?  Modern?  Jazz?  No matter what, a college program that you choose should have a curriculum that includes Ballet and Modern dance.  Some programs, such as Oklahoma City University, offer jazz and tap on a daily basis.  Other schools may only offer jazz or tap once a week, with a curriculum that emphasizes ballet and modern technique.  

3.  Levels of dance - The excellence of a schools dance program and its suitability for you may be tied to the number of class levels the school has.  For example, if you are interested in focusing on ballet you will want to choose a school with six levels of ballet over a school with two levels of ballet.   

4.  Program Location - Where is the program located within the University or College's structure?  Does dance have its own school?  Is it within the school of performing arts?  A dance program that has its own school or is located within the school of performing arts is more prestigious and, most likely, will be higher quality than dance program located within the school of Arts and Sciences or Speech!

5.  University Location - If you want to take supplementary classes or have dance opportunities outside of your University, you may want to attend a school that is located near a major dance city - New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Chicago.  

6.  Faculty - The program faculty should have degrees in dance, in addition to professional experience and a knowledge of today's dance industry.  Ballet instructors should have performed with major ballet companies.  Theatre instructors should have performed on Broadway and in National Tours.  Instructors should still be active in the dance industry. 

Choose a program with the highest quality instructor possible.  Not only does this guarantee excellent instruction, it also means that the instructors have more industry ties and connections than an instructor who has not worked professionally.  In terms of networking, this will help you once you are preparing to graduate from college and are ready to become a professional dancer.  

7.  Extras - What types of "extras" are available at the University?  Is it possible to take acting and voice classes (especially important for those who want to perform as theatre dancers).  Classes on how to audition?  In addition, a good college dance program will provide master class opportunities with industry professionals.  This is important for both improving dance skills and networking.   Some colleges even arrange showcases so that their students may be viewed by casting directors and agents.  

Does the program offer education in skills that dancers will need to find a job?  If you break down the term "show business," there are two very important words - show and business.  Does the program focus just as much on the "business" as they do on the "show"? 

8.  Quality of Dancer - A quality dance program will have quality dancers enrolled in it.  Find out what past alumni are doing now.  There should be a good amount of alumni engaged in quality professional work.  If you can, arrange to watch a class or student performance.
