How to Prepare for Auditions Year Round
    
There's no doubt that auditions can be scary.  Choreography is thrown at the dancers quickly, and its easy to get intimidated.  So how do you combat this?  The best thing you can do is be prepared! 
 
In addition to taking your normal dance classes every week, search for master classes you can take!  Master classes are classes giving by guest industry professionals or successful dance teachers for one time only.  The more master classes you take, the more styles you're exposed too (styles that you might encounter in an audition).  Also, master classes tend to be fast paced, so they are a good preparation for auditions.  Its like going to an audition without the pressure of being judged. 
 
Also, competitive organizations such as Dance Masters of America, Dance Educators of America, and New York City Dance Alliance host several yearly master class conventions throughout the country.  These conventions normally consist of a day of classes in several disciplines (often tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, and modern) with respected teachers and professionals. 
  
If you can't travel to classes, or your schedule is too busy, purchase dance tapes that teach you routines and do them at home.  Some of our favorites are "Darrin's Dance Grooves" and "Go Fatima." 
  
Last, but certainly not least, listen to as much music as you can, especially popular music!  When you're familiar with a song, its easier to hit the accents and remember the choreography.  Become familiar with the lyrics to popular songs, too, because many choreographers create their dances to the lyrics of a song.  If you can't remember which lyrics come next, you'll get confused! 
 
Overall, being prepared for auditions just takes practice practice practice.  Make sure you're taking at least two ballet classes a week, to stay in shape and work on your technique.  Develop your own style!  Also, treat your brain like a muscle.  The more combinations you make it remember, the harder the muscle has to work, and the stronger it becomes.
