The Audition

Before you step out your door to go to the audition, make sure you have familiarized yourself with the requirements of the audition. These requirement should be included with any audition notices, or may be obtained through your manager if you have one.

REQUIREMENTS

Cruise lines do not hire anyone under the age of 18. Therefore, you must be 18 years old to go to the audition. Also, you are normally required to bring a resume and an 8"x10" headshot to auditions of all genres. If you do not have a headshot, its is very unlikely that you will make it past the first cut. If you do not show up to the audition prepared, you automatically send a message to the judges about the type of employee you will be.

On that note, Maintain an excellent attitude throughout the entire audition! Dancers who are easily discouraged, catty, or exhibit any negative behavior will not be chosen. Dancers are a dime-a-dozen, and if you are not willing to work hard and work well in a team, someone else is!

Also, pay attention to the height and dress size requirements of the cruise line. They don't list these for fun! The show costumes are pre-made, and re-used. If you can't fit into the costumes, you will not be hired! Please note that this does not refer to weight requirements. Since muscle weighs more than fat, weight is not an accurate measure of how well you will fit into a costume.

DANCING AT THE AUDITION

Many cruise line/revue choreographers and dancers testify that personality and character in dance are the most important attribute that auditioners look for. While its important to be well trained in various types of technique (double pirouettes, High Extensions, and High Kicks are some skills you should be able to perform well), the shows performed on cruise ships are for entertainment value. Audience members will be twice as entertained by someone with personality and stage presence than by someone without it.

Technically, judges are often looking for dancers that are strong in ballet, jazz, and tap. Acrobatics or Gymnastics are usually a plus, too.

Often, the auditions are run very simply: the dancers go across the floor in groups, and then perform a combination. Depending on how many cuts there are, dancers may be cut out after the across the floor section of the audition, and after the combination. You may not dance a lot before you are cut. Do not let this discourage you. The judges may be looking for a particular look or style for a specific show that they are putting together. If you do not fit the look, you may not be chosen. However, this does not mean that you won't be right for the next show that they produce! So, keep trying!

If you are cut from an audition, do not go up to the judges and ask them what you did wrong. Simply take the cut with grace, go home, and keep practicing.
