There are several different styles of ballet that a student may commit to learning, or a teacher may commit to teaching. The three most popular are Vaganova (Russian), Cecchetti (Italian), and Royal Academy of Dance (English). While the five basic foot positions will always stay the same, the names for arabesques, directions to face, arm positions, and some steps vary among the styles. Therefore, it is best for a student to commit to studying one form of dance, for consistency and physical coordination. For all three styles of ballet, it is customary for the dancer to “test” before proceeding to the next level of instruction.

The Cecchetti technique was named after Enrico Cecchetti, a ballet master of Italy. Stylistically, Cechetti style emphasizes seamless arm flow from position to position. The exercises for each student level are set, meaning that the teacher does not have the freedom to create his or her own exercises.

The Russian technique was named after Agrippina Vaganova, formerly artistic director of the Kirov Ballet. In contrast to Cecchetti technique, the hands are emphasized in the Vaganova technique and do not flow seamlessly from one position to another. Instead, a “flapping” feeling results because the hands lag behind the rest of the movement and turn into position at the last moment. Also unlike Cecchetti technique, the teacher is given freedom to design his or her own class around the guidelines of the Vaganova method. Schools around the world, including the National Ballet School of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, use Vaganova technique.

The Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, commonly referred to as R.A.D, is one of the most popular dance syllabi in the world. The Academy was founded in 1920 by several European ballet teachers, five of who continued on to create the R.A.D. syllabus. For more information about the R.A.D.
